Ride Description

Aspen in Northern AZ

Aspen in Northern AZ

The brevet is a loop which starts in Flagstaff and traverses Navajo Reservation land stopping in the small town of Leupp. From there, we'll head south for Winslow, AZ. The route takes you past the famous corner in Winslow, AZ. You'll want to stop and get your photo taken on the corner. While you're there, you will be listening to the soundtrack that made it famous.

You'll stop in Winslow to fuel up before heading back into the Arizona high country. It's a gradual, but long, climb to get back into the forest. Once you enter the Coconino National Forest, you'll remain there to the finish. It's a beautiful ride in this area, and one that few Arizona visitors take the time to experience.

After your control/respite in Happy Jack, you'll climb some more to reach the high point of the ride (7650'). This area is high enough to sustain Aspen along with the pines. They are really beautiful at this time of year. After this, there are only gentle rollers all the way to the finish.

Terrain: The route is strongly rolling with one long, sustained climb.

Rider Info

Lights: Required. There will be a light inspection at check-in to verify front and rear lights are working and are sufficient for night riding. Also required are reflective vest or sash and ankle reflectors.

Regular services are available for most of the route. The exception is the 54 mile stretch between Winslow and Happy Jack. Riders will want to make sure they are prepared for that long stretch which predominantly climbs for that entire distance. A hydration pack or 3rd bottle are recommended.

July is monsoon season in Arizona's high country. It is not uncommon to have afternoon/evening rain. It's usually refreshing, but can be cold at these elevations. Riders should be prepared accordingly.
