Ride Description
Aspen in Northern AZ
This 600k is comprised of 2 loops back to the same start/finish location. There are multiple lodging options in this area. The 1st is 375k and the 2nd is 230k. These routes are currently under review at RUSA, but are not expected to change significantly. The start/finish location will not change.
The 1st loop starts in Flagstaff and traverses Navajo Reservation land stopping in the small town of Leupp. From there, we'll continue on the rez to the small town of Dilkon. After the control there, we'll head south for Winslow, AZ. The route takes you past the famous corner in Winslow, AZ. You'll want to stop and get your photo taken there. While you're there, you will be listening to the soundtrack that made it famous.
You'll want to stop in Winslow to fuel up before heading back into the Arizona high country. It's a gradual, but long, climb to get back into the forest. Once you enter the Coconino National Forest, you'll remain there to the finish. It's a beautiful ride in this area, and one that few Arizona visitors take the time to experience.
After your control/respite in Happy Jack, you'll climb some more to reach the high point of the ride (7650'). This area is high enough to sustain Aspen along with the pines. They are really beautiful at this time of year. After this, there are only gentle rollers all the way to the finish.
The 2nd "loop" will visit some of Flagstaff's most iconic areas - Walnut Canyon National Monument, Snow Bowl ski resort, Wupatki National Monument and Sunset Volcano National Monument. Phew! The 2nd loop is shorter in distance, but does have a couple substantial climbs up to Snow Bowl (9300' elev) and getting from Wupatki to Sunset Crater. It's a scenic route with a lot of varied terrain. You will get views from multiple directions of the 12,634' Mt Humphrey.
